French singer Byga formed his band here in Beijing. The band’s musical style is light and bouncy, in the style of the folk French “chanson”. To Byga, the traditional French chanson is often lacking in energy. His songs, accompanied by acoustic guitar and double bass, are rhythmically uplifting and at times humorous. The songs invite his audience to move and dance to the lyrics. Byga is a classically trained pianist/musician who single-handedly composes music, writes lyrics and makes music arrangements. His music is melodic and pure, without pretensions of overly complicated techniques.
Byga often draws his inspirations from his dreams. He would often wake up in the middle of the night, frantically writing down the notes he remembers from his dreams, and slowly develops the basic themes into fully developed music. His songs are based on everyday observations from his travels around the world, and are deeply influenced by Georges Brassens, the famous French singer-songwriter and poet. They cover themes from childhood memories of weekend strolls to social satires about the nouveau riche.
