Permalink Reply by alexeykann on October 10, 2012 at 5:31pm My idea is very simple, true patriotism is like a true love: everyone talks about it, but few ones have seen it:)

"patrotism is the last refuge of scoundrel"
a good quote! could you please illustrate its definition?
if i am not misunderstanding, it explain the negative aspect of patriotism?
Permalink Reply by alexeykann on October 12, 2012 at 4:32am The problem is that the patriotism has become just a word covering for politicians, who use it for manipulations of a public opinion. And that problem is topical since 18 century (Samuel Johnson was born in 1709). Actually the patriotism as sentiments to one's nation showed up in 18 century at the same time with appearance of national states and conception of nation. Before that there were Empire conception where the role of patriotism belonged to a devotion to monarch.
Permalink Reply by Black Dynamite on October 12, 2012 at 9:00am Definitely. It happens in every country. In the US you have Tea Party activists who hide behind "patriotism" to spread their hate and prejudice. Just about every government in the world is guilty of using patriotism as a means to push forth some political agenda.

Cons:
My definition of patriotism is as follows: Support for one's country through thick and thin. Through the good times and bad times, one supports his/her country. Accepting faults as well as strengths and realizing that nothing is perfect but keeping optimism that things CAN improve.
