Spanish Wine Revolution

Information

Spanish Wine Revolution

Spain - the land of leathery, over-oaked reds and dark yellow, old cologne-scented, oxidised whites - has finally come of age. No other European wine-producing country has changed so dramatically, and for the better, in the past 20 years.

El mejor vino del mundo, pero el peor vendido...

Finca Resalso Emilio Moro 2009. Finesse from Ribera.

Tasted at Olé Restaurant. Emilio Moro is one of the most prestigious wineries from Ribera, the wine is on the entry-level or popular side, but still delivers the expected quality from this big player of the Ribera del Duero.

My Notes:

  • Grape: Tempranillo. Roble: 4 months french Oak
  • Color: Dark red rubi, not too thick layers. Light purple edges.
  • Aroma: Medium intensity. Spices, black fruits, White pepper. The french oak is quite evident.
  • Taste: Good acidity and gentle tannings. Very easy to drink!

Price: 120-150 RMB Company EMW

Value:8 Score:8

Valtravieso Crianza 2006. Very complex Ribera.

Tasted at Niajo.

I have again the chance to enjoy an amazing wine dinner with Alex from Niajo. We shared arros negre, esgarraet and super crispy croquetas. Amazing stuff.

To pair these valencian delicacies we opened an extraordinary wine from Ribera del duero, a coupage of tempranillo, cabernet and merlot. Here are my notes:

Valtravieso Crianza 2006

Color: Dark cherry, great intensity but very clear layers. Fantastic “tears”.

Aroma: A feast of aromas. Coffee, chocolate, spices, mint, licorice, balsamic notes with hints of black and red fruits. What a perfume! Mind blowing…

Taste: Very smooth tannings, great retronasal, just a perfect simphony of aromas and flavours. Unforgetable.

Price: 300 RMB. Company: Unknown (but It has been imported to China)

Value: 9.5 Score: 9.8

A Chinese Wine Dinner. Shandong Home Cooking + Alcanta Monastrell.

My girlfriend’s artist friends invited me to a great home cooking dinner yesterday night. I had the chance to taste a great selection of healthy delicacies from Shandong province. To pair the dishes we brought an entry-level monastrell from Bodegas Bocopa, a big winery from Alicante. The couple that invited us was very pleased with the wine, they thought it was smooth and very pleasent to drink. Its interesting to note that the young generation in China is getting use to the good habit of consuming wine almost in a daily basis. They got stored some wines from Chile, Argentina and California. All of them entry level, between 60-80 rmb, which in Spain would be not entry level but mid-level. Anyway is really nice to see how the wine market is developing in China, unfortunately -and this is not new- they didn’t know about the wonders of spanish wines…so much work ahead for us!

So what kind of wines chinese young people with medium-high incomes are looking for nowadays? They are still in the learning process, so wines with soft tannins, vivid colors and aromas, extremely fruity and pleasent to drink are the winners. We have a great representation of those in Spain, particularly from Jumilla, Alicante or Mancha. Of course, prices should be within the affordable range: 50-100 rmb. In conclusion, there is a lot of potential, but also a lot of work to do in regards of marketing and promotion from our public institutions and companies.

Going back to the beautiful dinner we had, you can see the pictures hereunder. A very healthy combination of vegetables, sliced potato with eggs, marinated chicken wings, “chinese chorizo”, and seafood soup.

About the wine, combined pretty well with all the dishes, particularly with the chicken wings and the shandong chorizo, here are my notes:

Alcanta Monastrell 2009 (Alicante DO)

  • Grape: Monastrell. Young wine.
  • Color: Red cherry with very light blue edges. Very clear layers.
  • Aroma: Low intensity. Red fruits and some spices. Not very complex.
  • Taste: Short & easy. Soft tannins.

Price: 50-70 RMB. Company: French Wine Paradox

Value: 8.5 Score: 7
